Counselling

Fertility treatment is more than appointments, tests and treatment plans. It can bring hope and excitement, but it can also bring uncertainty, difficult decisions, disappointment and emotions you may not have expected.

At Stellar Fertility Melbourne, we believe your emotional wellbeing matters just as much as your physical health. Our fertility counselling service provides a safe, confidential and supportive space to talk through what you are experiencing, understand your options and find ways to cope that feel right for you.

Support for the emotional side of your fertility journey

Fertility treatment is more than appointments, tests and treatment plans. It can bring hope and excitement, but it can also bring uncertainty, difficult decisions, disappointment and emotions you may not have expected. At Stellar Fertility, we believe your emotional wellbeing matters just as much as your physical health. Our fertility counselling service provides a safe, confidential and supportive space to talk through what you are experiencing, understand your options and find ways to cope that feel right for you. You do not need to be in crisis to see a counsellor. Sometimes having someone who understands fertility care can simply make a difficult journey feel a little easier.

A space to talk, without judgement

Fertility counselling gives you time to step outside the medical side of treatment and focus on you. Your counsellor can help you explore your feelings, develop coping strategies, work through difficult decisions and consider what support you may need around you. Our counsellors have specialised experience in fertility and reproductive counselling and understand that everyone’s experience is different. There is no expectation that you will have all the answers before you come to counselling. Sometimes the most useful first step is simply having somewhere safe to say, “I’m finding this hard.”

Support through unexpected outcomes

Fertility treatment does not always lead to the outcome we hope for. An unsuccessful cycle, an unexpected result, pregnancy loss or other difficult news can leave you feeling shocked, disappointed, sad, confused or simply unsure of what to do next. There is no right way to respond, and everyone processes these experiences differently. Counselling can provide a private space to process what has happened, acknowledge the emotions that come with it and consider what you need next. You might need time. You might need information. You might need someone to listen. You might need help deciding what comes next. Our role is to meet you where you are.

Counselling for donor conception

If you are considering or undertaking treatment using donor sperm, eggs or embryos, counselling is an important part of the process. Implications counselling provides an opportunity to understand the emotional, social and legal considerations of donor conception and make informed decisions about your path to parenthood. It can include conversations about family, relationships, future disclosure to children, donor-conceived people’s rights, expectations and boundaries, and the short and long-term implications of donor conception. In Victoria, implications counselling is a mandatory part of donor treatment, with specific requirements for donors, recipients and their partners. Your counsellor will guide you through the relevant information without judgement, giving you the opportunity to ask questions and consider what donor conception means for you and your family.

Counselling is part of compassionate fertility care

At Stellar Fertility, support is available throughout your fertility journey, not only when you are actively undergoing treatment. Our fertility specialists, nursing team and counsellors work together to support both the practical and emotional aspects of your care. You can reach out after an unsuccessful cycle, during a particularly stressful stage of treatment, when making a difficult decision, or simply when you feel you would benefit from talking with someone. Additional wellbeing support may also include guidance around stress management, nutrition and lifestyle, and referrals to appropriate external practitioners where helpful.

You don’t have to navigate it alone

Fertility treatment can take up a lot of emotional space. Whether you are feeling hopeful, uncertain, overwhelmed, relieved, disappointed or somewhere in between, your experience deserves to be heard. Counselling is not about telling you what you should feel or what decision you should make. It is about giving you the time, space and support to understand what matters to you and move forward with greater confidence. If you think counselling could help, you can speak with our friendly administration or nursing team about arranging an appointment.
