Understanding the Jargon

Fertility treatment can come with more than its fair share of medical terminology, and then there is the language of Medicare, safety nets and out of pocket costs. We have created this glossary to explain some of the most common billing and accounts terms you may come across during fertility treatment.

Medicare Rebate

A Medicare rebate is a refund from the Australian Government to assist in partially covering the cost of eligible medical services.

Out of pocket (OOP)

The out-of-pocket cost we refer to is the difference between the amount you pay up-front for an eligible medical service and what you receive back from Medicare.

Third party fees

Third party fees refer to the costs associated with any provider external to Stellar Fertility that is involved with patient treatment and care (hospital, pharmacy, anaesthetist etc.)

Private fee

A private fee refers to the amount charged by healthcare providers for services that are not covered by Medicare or private health insurance.

Extended Medicare Safety Net (EMSN)

The Extended Medicare Safety Net (EMSN) is designed to provide additional financial support for people who have higher out-of-pocket medical costs for services provided outside of hospitals, such as visits to doctors, specialists, and other treatments like assisted reproductive treatment (ART). Once you have reached the annual threshold, Medicare increases the rebate for eligible services, therefore reducing your out-of-pocket costs. The EMSN resets on the 1st of January each year.

First & Subsequent Cycle

First cycle refers to the initial treatment cycle, completed at any Australian fertility clinic, within a single calendar year.
Subsequent cycle refers to any treatment cycle, completed at any Australian fertility clinic, there after a first cycle within the same calendar year.
